Unit conversion is one of the basic activities in science. The ability to convert units of length, mass or area is essential in physics and mathematics. In this article we will not cover all conversion aspects. Mostly we will focus on inches conversion, but we will also present conversions related to centimeter. That will be centimeters converter or rather a conversion table for values that we can calculate from centimeters (cm), inches.
The inch (symbol: in) is a unit of length in the British Imperial Units and the United States systems of measurement. When we convert inches to other units, we receive values: 1/36 yard or 1/12 of a foot. Since adoption of the International Yard and Pound Agreement in the 1959 one inch conversion into centimeter is exactly 2.54 cm.
The foot (or feet; symbol: ft) is a unit of length in the British imperial and United States customary systems of measurement. Since the International Agreement of 1959, one ft is approximately equivalent of 0.3048 meters exactly.
The yard (symbol: yd) is an English unit of length in both the British imperial and American systems of measurement equalling 3 foot or 36 inches.
Miles can be divided into the two most common types in use today, namely land miles and nautical miles. According to international standard unit land mile is approximately 1.609 km, which is equivalent to 1609 meters. The nautical mile is slightly longer, converted to kilometers it is equal to 1.852 km, which corresponds to distance equal 1852 m.
How many centimeters (cm)
In the International System of Units (SI) abbreviation for centimeter is cm. A centimeter (centimetre in international spelling or centimeter in American spelling) is a unit of length, which is equal to one hundredth of a meter. One centimeter (cm) is also equal 10 millimeters. According to modern definition 1 cm corresponds approximately to the length of an adult thumbnail.
How many cm – cm table
Centimeters (cm) are decimal fraction of a meter. That values are part of a metric system. Both customary units are most often used in Europe (US customary units were mentioned earlier). Cm converter bases on formula presented below. A logic hidden behind this formula is as follows: when we multiply every value by 10 or a multiple of 10, we can receive another corresponding value which is another unit. This conversion factor is applicable only when we convert cm and other metric system values. This conversion factor example will not apply to inches.
1 meter = 100 centimeters (cm) = 93.7007874 inches
100 centimeters (cm) = 1000 mm
1 km = 100000 centimeters (cm) = 93700.7874 inches
How many inches? – how to measure width in inches?
For measurements in inches the best way is to use a tool specifically designed. However if you don’t have this type of ruler, there are other solutions that you can use for conversions to measure for example a box in inches. How to convert inches to cm will be presented in next paragraph. Here we can focus on inches measurement. It’s worth to mention how for example a ruler is divided into fractions. The number of lines placed between the bigger, numbered lines is important. For correct calculation we need to remember that: 1. one unnumbered line means that the inches are broken down into halves; 2. three lines divide inches into quarters; 3. fifteen unnumbered lines breaks down the inches into sixteenths, etc.

When we convert inches to cm we can use conversion tables available on many web pages but it’s also good to make a conversion chart using logic presented above.
Perfect world for imperfect people – should it really be all about inches?
The specific proportions of 36–24–36 inches (90-60-90 centimeters) have frequently been given as the “ideal”, or “hourglass” proportions for women since at least the 1960s. Over the years this belief was communicated to the world as the only truth and made many women unhappy as not all of them were able to answer for that perfect figure requirement. Meanwhile this pressure got changed as scientists shared their calculations and have concluded that the perfect figure size of women is 38-24-35 inches.
It seems that answer for a question what should be the perfect breast-waist-hip measurement changes as world changes. Currently it seems that “body positivity” philosophy supports those who do not have specific proportions of 36–24–36 inches. We have to remember that an answer and the right way to follow should be person’s health, comfort and happiness, not a question “how many cm” or “how many inches” should be considered as ideal proportions.
